Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question certain calls from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
