What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?

For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

Editor's Note: This article details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the significance of the encounter originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
