The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
