The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will independently develop this new flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Future Plans
The founder revealed that he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
