The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular series coming to an end—and a second season already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner See the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
