Stupidity and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Might Persist Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, perhaps the most significant ever taken of a member of the monarchy.
There stood the Duke of York, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate smiled knowingly in the backdrop.
Absent that snapshot, captured at a party in 2001, who would have believed the assertions of a young woman who said she was trafficked across the sea and compelled to have perfunctory relations with a individual of the royal bloodline?
An odd, revealing action by someone who had openly claimed to have never been aware of her, said he could not have had sex with her, and yet provided millions of family funds to resolve a drawn-out lawsuit.
A Long Period of Controversy
In this context, talk of the royals acting swiftly to cut Andrew off are wide of the mark. This controversy has persisted for the better part of 15 years since that image, and an additional snapshot of Andrew walking amiably with a notorious individual came to light.
- Self-importance: How long did his brothers and sisters, possibly even his mother and father, understand that Andrew was so self-entitled?
- Problematic Connections: They must have realized, if his employees and the law enforcement were fulfilling their roles, that he had some deeply disreputable friends given he unabashedly welcomed them to estates.
- Monetary Excess: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with public money.
Travel were documented in public records: private aircraft travel from the estate to a country club and back again in time for midday meal, exclusive air travel instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "the frequent flyer".
World of Deference
Additionally the arrogance which required subservience when he appeared in a room or the profound consciousness about his royal titles used on his letterheads in letters to his friends.
He avoided accountability while his parent, who strangely indulged him, was still living. The monarch did at least strip him of royal responsibilities and ceremonial ranks in the wake of his catastrophic and, we now know, deceptive television interview six years ago.
Recent Developments
Merely in the last two weeks that events progressed rapidly, following the release of biographical works giving more troubling details of his actions and that of his companions.
More information have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could avoid lying about his interaction with a disgraced individual.
The public (and the press) were far more perceptive of the monarchy. There was nobody of any consequence to support him, a consequence of all those years of hubris.
Monarchical Concerns
The more intelligent monarchical figures realized that. The one imperative is to pass on the monarchy, if not as before at least intact and unstained.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to reverse the image of past sovereigns, showing they are useful, accountable and reactive to their subjects.
Andrew was putting all that in danger in an era when submission and discretion is no longer sufficient.
Consequences
Eventually, the notoriously uncertain sovereign was pressured further. There was little choice. The palace had relinquished authority of the story.
Currently the removal of titles and the ongoing and permanent public humiliation that will hurt Andrew most deeply.
- Downgrading: Demoted to just a commoner
- Prior Instance: The first monarch to lose his honorifics in contemporary era
- Armed Forces: Particularly painful given his duty in the conflict
He is still a counsellor of state, theoretically able to substitute for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the crown, but not any of these will actually happen.
What Lies Ahead
Can persons he meets still acknowledge him? Will they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Would they say Andrew,
Naturally, he is not moving to an ordinary town, but to the royal family's large grounds at Sandringham.
In that place, he will be furnished by the monarch with one of the grace and favour houses and given some type of financial support.
This differs from his previous residence, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit far, but even so it may not be sufficiently removed.
Pending Matters
This is not over. There are still records in the possession of US Congress to be made public.
- Political Pressure: Could legislators demand more
- Monetary Probe: Or investigate the improper use of taxpayer funds
- Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his behavior
Maybe for the present the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is contained. The statement from the palace was plainly that the removal of designations was what the king, and notably other senior royals, wanted.
A Shift in Position
The cessation of illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, significantly, the short communication showed plainly that the institution were supporting the victim's version of incidents.
Additionally, for the first time they eventually showed regard for the victims: "The censures are considered essential, notwithstanding the reality that he continues to deny the allegations against him."
Finally it is entitlement, self-interest and laziness that will destroy the institution. In his stupidity, self-indulgence and venality, Andrew seems never to have grasped that lesson.
