Meteorologists have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be cold, meaning extra layers vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Alerts Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
