The ex-lawyer for the former president has resigned as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This follows a legal ruling that questioned her legal standing to hold the office.

Attorney General's Statement

US Attorney General, the Attorney General, announced her stepping down on Monday. In a statement that the court's "flawed" ruling made it impossible for her to perform her duties.

"Do not interpret following the order as giving up," she declared. "The effort will now stretch across the nation."

Judicial Challenge

Her resignation comes a week after a US appeals court ruled that she had been unlawfully serving as the top prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect scores of legal proceedings in the state.

The court ruled that a temporary posting that did not receive the advice and consent of the Senate violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

Ongoing Legal Battle

It was also stated that she will remain at the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. She will pursue additional appeals of the ruling, in the hope of achieving a overturned decision.

Writing online, she argued that the court "must not countermand the President's choice of attorneys responsible for carrying out the executive branch's core responsibility of prosecuting crime."

Performance in Office

The attorney general praised the prosecutor's work and pointed out that during her run, the Newark saw a 20% reduction in criminal activity. It was also reported that the Camden recorded its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 without a homicide.

Connection to Donald Trump

Habba, was initially recruited to the former president's legal defense in 2021. She went on to represented her client in his hush-money trial in 2024, which resulted in his conviction on multiple felony counts of financial record manipulation.

Prior to Habba took on the federal prosecutor position, Trump had stated he was naming her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, calling Habba as deeply loyal and a "tireless advocate for justice".
