Israeli citizens mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
People have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.
The source explained the morning session concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war administration of the territory
Public Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see all home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence recover," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, sector and locality districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his face on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of several people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, medics said.
