California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's time in office as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
Newsom has emerged as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, using his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and warned suspending the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he stated, following a recent fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
Duffy had before announced he was holding back $40 million from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a recent release responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Polling Data and Political Future
A this month's poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. In recent years, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, Newsom remarked while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The idea that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
