Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The White House did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar claiming the president had pushed him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Lavrov commented on this week, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently came ahead of reports that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The talk about the missiles had turned out to be a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he added.
