Arne Slot Maintains He Feels Safe and Retains The Club's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's understandable for questions to be raised about his position following a further heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 games, representing the team's worst run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got significant support from management,” Slot commented.
“It's important to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but when you're coaching a team and struggling then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my situation. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a challenging situation but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Club Management
When asked to elaborate on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me constantly of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “Through standard discussions I feel the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Response
The manager lamented familiar weaknesses from his squad in their European loss, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder remarked.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad internally. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the words.”
He added, “It's tough because I play for the team I support. I support them, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a period such as this with outcomes so bad.”
He stated, “However we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And as long as it is removed, we’re always going to fight.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to the top, demonstrate to all again what this club is about and why it's known as the greatest side in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
