Alexander Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in ATP World Tour Finals Clash

Introduction

The inherent challenges of tournament pool play often result in at this point of the season-ending championships fans frequently find themselves scratching our heads, scrambling about for a calculator and attempting to calculate the complex potential outcomes for advancement. Yet today's game between Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is straightforward. It's a direct elimination: the winner sets up a semifinal contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the unsuccessful competitor heads out.

Zverev is the favourite for this: the world No 3 is the player with greater achievements, has claimed the title at this competition previously on two instances and holds the advantage in their personal record 6-3, having won both their past encounters on an covered hard surface.

But … this is the surface on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed most of his championships, he’s riding a high after his impressive recovery against Ben Shelton on recently and he took out Zverev in the US Championships third round in late summer. Furthermore, conditions are faster in the host city than at the US Open venue, which is even more beneficial in Auger-Aliassime's favour.

Should Zverev be cautious, as he did against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the European player with his stinging serves and bold strategy, it could well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the earlier standout who was earlier slated in front of the Spanish and Italian stars to succeed the Big Three – who secures the dubious honour of facing the top-ranked player on Saturday.

Play begins: at about 8.30pm local time, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
