A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground

Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange lodging when I arrived, however once I got there, a major event was happening and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Hailing from Singapore, I considered the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. Unsure of quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking near the casino, believing I might spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at an interview the next morning, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

Our society requires more individuals like that woman.

It seems I seemed lost since a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she suggested I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one sandwiches she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot and secure for the evening.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she accepted being a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed many times over. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
